Did You Know…?
“When a baby octopus is born it’s only about the size of a flea!”
This fun little explainer video animation was created for a Motion Graphics class project. The goal of the project was to create a 2D animated explainer video that communicated a “fun fact” to the viewer with visual narrative.
The most challenging aspect of this project was to communicate the message clearly with mostly visual cues, with as little text as possible. Text can be cumbersome and distracting from the visuals, especially in such a short span of 7 seconds, and was to be avoided if possible.
To overcome this obstacle, I used a very minimalistic style of illustration enhanced with easy-to-follow visual cues. I focused on a narrative-style explanation, as if the viewer were watching a storybook come to life and following the progression of the character - in this case, the baby octopus. The visual cues of the ruler to measure the size of the octopus help qualify the narration as well.
Illustrations created in Adobe Illustrator. Animation done in After Effects. Sound effects rendered in Adobe Audition.
