Gig Poster

Kadhja Bonet gig poster

This project was done for an in-class motion graphics challenge; the objective was to create an animated sequence using a previous work of art. I chose to animate a gig poster concept designed for Jazz/Folk singer Kadhja Bonet.

The initial design was developed for a separate Graphic Design assignment, which required creating an promotional poster which combined different artistic styles. I played with combining art nouveau and psychedelic poster designs to reflect her unique blend of musical styles and influences in her songs. Inspiration was taken from Kadhja Bonet’s music for the design, which is largely based on her song “Honeycomb.” The thick outlines, natural forms of flowers and bees, and the powerful female form are reflective of art nouveau style. The dripping elements, bold contrasting colour scheme, and hand-drawn text are reminiscent of 60’s psychedelic music posters.

The animated component was rendered in a span of 3 hours as part of an in-class challenge. I enjoy how the subtle animation makes the art seem as if it is itself alive and “in bloom,” tying it back to the art nouveau and psychedelic styles. Again, I tried to be true to the musical themes in Kadhja Bonet’s work, which reflect growth, femininity, sensuality and rebirth.

The final poster design was created using a combination of Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop illustration. Animation was done through After Effects.
