Indelible - Mortalis

I had so much fun putting together this music video with local Winnipeg heavy metal band Mortalis for the release of their new song “Indelible.”

This project began as a final group project as part of the RRC Digital Media Design program, and became much more. It was a challenge to combine our class project’s requirements with the band’s desires for a video that reflected their unique heavy metal style at the same time. Working with fellow RRC students Karina Lebedeva and Amanda Devenney, this music video was put together over two full days of filming in two separate locations, and many nights of post-production editing.

The primary band footage was shot within an abandoned warehouse on 3 separate Canon DSLR cameras. Secondary footage of "The Witch” scenes were shot in a staged residential home. We used a lot of practical tricks to bring the story to life; the combination of lighting, coloured filters, and post-production editing created a dark mood reflective of the song’s lyrics. We even created the voodoo doll props by hand - one for each band member.

From start to finish, the project took approximately 3 weeks to complete. The process comprised of many parts, beginning with creating a preliminary script and shot list, band meetings, script revisions, prop construction, staging, setup, shooting, and post-production. The end result turned out even better than we had anticipated, and the band was thrilled with the results.

Special thanks to the guys for being so involved and so much fun to work with - Josh, Kris, Ben, Scotty, Patty, and Spacebar Dave.

Additional thanks and actor credit to Monica Fontaine as “The Witch.”
